Manamaid!

This is a gift for the gorgeous and talented Lucy Knisley, who once wrote me a song about a manamaid. She's pretty great, you should check out her stuff right now.

Hey Vera,

I love your work and it's a big inspiration.

This mermaid is beautiful.

Just wondering. What brushes do you use?

Lately i've been favoring these portable water color brush pens, and i've been kind of addicted to them. Not to mention the fact that i've been watercoloring really small in moleskins.

I want to do some nice illustrations on some bigger paper but don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

Hey nelson,

Thanks! I use winsor&newton series 7 brushes in a bunch of sizes. They hold tons of water and double as inking brushes. I don't like the water-filled pens for anything other than emergencies, you can't control the concentration of your paint.

I never paint very large so I can't help you out with big paper. Just spend enough money and you'll get good stuff!

This reminds me of the time my brother was snorkeling in murky Florida water and accidentally swam face-first into the side of a manatee. The manatee jokes thus abound. All this to say: I enjoy!

Nelson (in case you read this?): I think Arches is hands-down the best watercolor paper. It comes in all sizes, even by the yard (if you be crazy enough). Generally the thing to look for is high cotton rag content in papers (more forgiving and holds pigment best). If you like books, the Artist's Manual is handy reference for stuff like this. or! there's always good ol' trial and error. Hope that helps!
